Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, just off the West Coast of Scotland. Known as the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, Islay is an amazing island experience – dramatic coastal seascapes, wild inland freshwater lochs, some of the best wild brown trout and salmon fishing and numerous species of wildlife, especially birds.

There’s plenty to explore on Islay – whether it’s a trip back in time to explore the heritage and history of the island; a trip to the world-famous whisky distilleries of Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg or Bowmore (to name but a few!), a round on the recently redesigned Machrie Links or a more adventurous outdoor experience – there will be something to suit your tastes.

For the food lovers amongst you, there is a thriving restaurant scene which can be found in Port Ellen, Bowmore and Port Charlotte which showcases the best produce that the island and the West Coast of Scotland has to offer.

No matter what time of year you choose to visit Islay, you will be in awe of the natural beauty of the Island!

Location

Situated midway between Bowmore and Port Ellen, the lodge is perfectly situated to experience all that Islay has to offer.

Your journey to Islay: -

Your Hebridean journey by ferry is the best way to clear away the cobwebs. The picturesque drive from Glasgow to the ferry terminal at Kennacraig takes you past Loch Lomond and if you don’t stop for oysters and sea food at Loch Fyne will take you approximately two and a half hours. Details of your travel options are set out below.

By Car & Ferry
At the Kennacraig ferry port, there are sailings to Port Askaig or Port Ellen on Islay which takes two hours. You can also travel as a foot passenger for a modest each way cost. Advance booking for your car is a necessity.
For more information on ferry timetables – visit the calmac website.
Calmac also operates a ferry from Oban to Islay on a Wednesday and a Saturday.

Gorgeous Holiday Home
4.8 stars
We had a wonderful week at Machrie View as a family of 7. The house is fitted to an exceptionally high standard making it feel like a 5* hotel experience. All the bedrooms have very comfy beds, fluffy duvets, pillows, blankets, and luxurious bathrooms. The views from the top floor open plan living space and kitchen are stunning. Watching the weather float in and out was better than watching TV. The house is located beside the tiny airport but it was fun watching the planes land and take off. There are never any flights in the early morning, late evening, or during the night so noise was never an issue. We ate in Port Ellen twice at Sea Salt and The Argyll Hotel which were both excellent and only a 10 min car journey away. Machair View is a well-positioned house to visit all the distilleries and beaches and when we return to Islay we will definitely book to stay here again.

Great time
5 stars
Machrie View is a splendid place to spend your vacation in Islay. It is conveniently located next to the airport (but don't worry there's only 2 flights in and 2 flights out all day so its not a nuisance) and is also located just a short drive to Port Ellen where there's pubs, a grocery store etc. The house itself is beautiful, quite spacious and great for a large group. All your amenities are in good working order. I would recommend this place to anyone else and if I return to Islay I would stay here again.

Stunning property
4.8 stars
The Machrie View is a great home base for exploration of Islay. It has all the amenities you could wish for, with comfortable beds + bathrooms, great seats in the living room, a full kitchen and a dining area that invites you to long nights and good conversations with friends. The road and nearby airport won't effect the peace and tranquillity of the location. The only thing that woke us up one morning were a couple of sheep that took over the road for several yards as a shortcut ;-) Once in a lifetime experience! The Island itself has so much to offer: the best whisky, delicious seafood, spectacular and diverse nature and super kind people. Sam and her team provided us with all the info and made sure we had a great stay. We'll definitely come back if we see an opportunity.

Lovely stay in Islay
4.8 stars
Really nice house, comfy beds, excellent en suite bathrooms. Good quality fittings and the kitchen is well equipped. Fabulous view from the main room. Only negative comments are very minor, eg cooker hood is positioned so that you can catch your head on it, we had to ask for the key code for access as it didn’t arrive until we were on the ferry, etc. We would definitely stay here again. Islay is fantastic and the house is very centrally positioned on the island.

Amazing Accommodation
5 stars
Stayed at Machrie View whilst working & staying on Islay and can highly recommend the accommodation. We have told our employer that if we are doing further work on Islay that this is the only accommodation that we want to stay in. 5 star accommodation with first class service.

Stunning house with views to die for!
5 stars
We were the first guests to stay at Machrie View and WOW what a fantastic location with breathtaking, uninterrupted views across the Islay landscape to the ocean! You can spend all day in the open planned upstairs dining kitchen and lounge area! What a brilliant space to relax and unwind irrespective of the weather. The property will be even better once the landscaping is complete but that didn’t detract from a fab weekend. We will definitely go back, the house has everything you could need.
